LOVE
Why do humans have such a tendency to pile upon each other? Harris County, Texas has a population density of 2,402 people per square mile. Polk County, Texas has 43 people per square mile. People chose to live in Harris County for economic reasons. There is greater opportunity for employment and the ability to care for your family. It is quite reasonable to choose to live in a crowded area for this reason. However, why do people drive so closely to one another on the highway in Polk County as well as Harris County? People seem drawn to the bumper of the car in front of them when they know it would be safer for their loved ones if they kept a distance.
It is natural for creatures to enjoy and desire the company of others, but only humans can make that decision for self destructive reasons. Humans are the most dangerous animal in the wilderness because they share a gifted intelligence and is the only creature who kills for the fun of it. This is not a commentary on hunting. I have had several spiritual experiences hunting, and have depended on it for survival for one stretch. Most reasonable people know what I am talking about, and affirm there is a darkness within some of humanity. Therefore, the principles with which we make our decisions is one of life or death.
Abraham and Lot were uncle and nephew, but they were also competitors. As their agricultural businesses grew, they naturally began to experience conflicts between their enterprises. Both knew that continued conflict could create a schism that would undermine everyones success. Therefore, Abram suggested that they divide their future endeavors over two sections of the surrounding terrain. One section was in the vicinity of wealthy cities and the other a wilderness. The one closest to the cities was the natural choice for that would be closest to markets. Why did Abram, who was the most powerful, give his nephew Lot first choice?
Lot was guided by certain principles that were ingrained within him. The first shall be last and the servant of all, his duty as the head of the family, and his integrity to his pledge to his father to take care of his nephew Lot. Everyone can claim these principles, but there is one presence within the soul, which enables us to make the principled choice long before we know the results. Abram’s soul was filled with love. He loved his family, and selfless love enables us to make the best decisions.
Love enabled Abram to offer the best to his nephew, love enabled him to give up on his pacifism and attack the horde who help his nephew captive, and love was the character trait that inspired God’s blessing to be placed upon Abram’s life.
Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” Genesis 15:5
