CANOE AND OUTDOOR MINISTRY
“THE SEARCHERS”
Canoe and Outdoor Ministry
My name is Darwood Galaway. My wife and I joined First Church a little over a year ago, following retirement; Lee, an elementary school teacher and I, a Methodist Pastor. My greatest hope for retirement, was to find a way to invite others to journey into the wild to explore God’s Grace in a setting that minimizes human achievement, and emerses the soul in the wonder of God’s creation. Recently, I was given the opportunity to purchase seven additional canoes and a commercial canoe trailer. I marvel that the one who presented me with this opportunity lives a 1/2 mile from the house we built on the Trinity River. God is Good!
Lee and I are thankful for the warmth of your fellowship, and the many opportunities given us to serve. I write to announce a new ministry at First Church titled, “The Searchers”. I invite groups of people of all ages to join me for a canoe trip or camping experience. All I ask is that you disconnect your technology during our journey and be open to listening to a Bible story and a reflection upon the person and our savior Jesus Christ.
I have canoed thousands of miles in my lifetime, enjoyed camping experiences lasting part of a day to three and a half months, and I have never failed to experience God’s presence. This ministry is attached to the Outreach Committee of our church. I will serve as an unpaid volunteer and leader of The Searchers ministry.
There are three things you can do to support The Searchers:
1. You can go canoeing with me by inviting me to supply your group with equipment, training, and myself as guide. This can be an organized trip or, if your group is planning an outing close to a lake or river, I will come with my canoes and provide an extra experience. This invitation extends to groups not directly associated with our church.
2. If you have canoe or camping equipment that you would like to donate to The Searchers, I will pick those things up and supply you with a receipt for “A Gift in Kind.” I have already received one generous donation of equipment from a church member.
3. If you would like to make a monetary donation, send your check to the church made out to FUMC Livingston and earmark it, The Searchers. One hundred percent of these monies will go to provide grants to help those unable to afford immediate expenses like food, park fees, and gas.
Jesus said, “ Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; Knock, and the door will be opened.” Mt. 7:7 If you would like to be A Searcher, please call me at 713-854-6595.
Yours in Christ,
Darwood
